The solar power generation in the UK has broken records

In the past two years, the UK has increased the promotion of solar technology. After new data shows an increase in production capacity, favorable weather means that the solar power generation so far this year has exceeded the entire 2024.
According to the Financial Times, the capacity of solar technology has increased by one-fifth since 2023, and as of last weekend, the solar energy production in the UK in 2025 has been one-third higher than the same period last year.
Research from the University of Sheffield shows that 14.08 megawatt hours of electricity have been generated, which the Financial Times reports is enough to power 5.2 million households for a year or the London Underground network for over a decade.

Josie Murdoch, a policy analyst at Ember, an energy think tank, stated that the recent heatwaves experienced in many parts of the country have contributed to record breaking productivity.
She said that although the UK is known for its gloomy weather, solar energy will be unstoppable by 2025 due to the strong combination of very clear weather and record breaking capacity of the system.
In addition to the improvement in productivity, UK Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh described it as a clear sign that our clean energy mission is working, and advances in battery storage technology are also helping the UK's solar sector.
Adam Bell, former head of energy strategy at the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy, said, 'There are many people who want to build large-scale solar plus cell projects.' He is currently working at consulting group Stonehaven. Essentially, you produce solar energy during the day, store it in batteries, and sell it during peak hours at night. There's nothing you don't like... The future of these projects is enormous.
As costs continue to decrease... installing more and more electricity will make more sense, until daytime electricity is essentially free, just as Spain has approached
However, despite the increase in production and positive momentum, the UK still lags behind most of Europe in solar power generation. Ember's data shows that in July this year, only 13.44% of its energy was solar, while Spain's was 32.26%, or European leader Luxembourg's was 54.55%.
The Spanish government is one of the most enthusiastic governments in Europe in terms of renewable energy, despite major power supply failures in Spain and neighboring Portugal in April, which prompted right-wing politician Alberto Nunez Feijoo to say that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's left-wing government is "so committed to becoming the most environmentally friendly government in the world that you have led Spaniards into darkness".
In July, the UK energy regulator Ofgem approved a £ 24 billion ($32.5 billion) investment plan to enhance energy security and encourage a shift towards renewable energy.
Ofgem CEO Jonathan Brearley said that idleness is not an option, and it will cost consumers more - this is the key national infrastructure. The UK's dependence on imported natural gas puts us at risk of fluctuating international natural gas prices This record breaking investment will provide a more favorable domestic energy system for the UK and its customers.
